چکیده

Abstract: The processed potato industry is highly vertically coordina ted though the use of production contracts between growers and processors. Contracts in this industry are primarily used to combat market thinness and potato quality requirements. This study uses a two period principle-agent model to describe the incentives inherit in processing potato production contracts. Actual processor production contracts and delivered potato loads from the Columbia Basin are examined. We conclude that contracts are effective at increasing potato load quality over the spot market alternative. Additionally, processors are able to gage grower ability levels in at the end of the first contract period, which leads to reductions in grower payments for specific levels of potato quality, also known as ratcheting.

We construct and test an agency-theoretic model of broiler production contracts. Our empirical results generally support our model, and provide insight into the incentives underlying the design of the contract and the sources of returns to broiler processors and growers. Exclusionary Contracts , Entry , and Communication

I examine the incentives of firms to communicate entry into an industry where the incumbent writes exclusionary, long-term contracts with consumers. The entrant’s information provision affects the optimal contract proposal by the incumbent and leads to communication incentives that are highly non-linear in the size of the innovation. Entry with small and medium-to-large innovations is announced...

Why do academics engage with industry ? The entrepreneurial university and individual motivations

Optimisation of Healthcare Contracts: Tensions Between Standardisation and Innovation; Comment on “Competition in Healthcare: Good, Bad or Ugly?”

An important determinant of health system performance is contracting. Providers often respond to financial incentives, despite the ethical underpinnings of medicine, and payers can craft contracts to influence performance. Yet contracting is highly imperfect in both single-payer and multi-payer health systems. Arguably, in a competitive, multi-payer environment, contractual innovation may occur...
